The Anatomy of a License: Serial Number vs. Activation To understand the serial number's importance, one must first distinguish it from the product key or activation file. When a user purchases RSLogix 5000 (e.g., Standard, Professional, or Designer editions), Rockwell Automation provides a unique Serial Number (typically formatted as XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX ). This number identifies the specific commercial transaction—the "license seat." However, the serial number alone does not run the software.
