It was a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it listing on a local auction site. The photo was grainy, the lighting was terrible, and the subject line read simply:

His right hand tried to keep the beat. His left hand froze. His foot—his foot was a liar. The notes cascaded down the screen like a waterfall of failure. He missed almost everything. The game’s meter plummeted to zero, and the crowd booed him off the stage.

He tried again. And again. And again.

To most people, it looked like a relic. A beaten cardboard box, the size of a small coffee table, corners worn down to the grey pulp. Inside, a tangle of plastic instruments—a strat-shaped controller with faded stickers, a drum kit missing one red pad, and a microphone that looked like it had been dropped down a flight of stairs.
