The glass-and-steel towers of the 21st century now lean over narrow, cobbled lanes named "Pudding Lane" (where the Great Fire started) or "Bread Street." You can touch a stone from 100 AD and, thirty feet later, step into a Michelin-starred restaurant that used to be a warehouse for tobacco.

What saves London from the frantic pace of New York or Tokyo is the green. Londres is a forest pretending to be a city. Hyde Park, Hampstead Heath, Richmond Park (where deer roam like they own the place, because they do). On a sunny day—that rare, precious commodity—the grass vanishes under a blanket of bodies.
